royallyshafted[SCENE: Takuto and Sugata are in the bath, Sugata is reflecting on the recent conversation he had with Head regarding a position as Emperor of the Glittering Crux]
S: I really did want to protect Wako, but I also wanted the power that would come from apprivoising.
S: It's only normal.
T: Hmm...
S: What about you? Don't tell me you weren't interested in the power at all.
T: [reaches up to touch a scar on his chest] ...I dunno.
[Then Wako is yelling a them from the other side of the door]
W: Heey! Are you two going to make out in there forever? I wanna relax too!
T: Then join us!
S: Come in, Wako!
[Endscene!]
So this memory! Is interesting. There are two ways I look at it. One is that Sugata is being completely honest: He apprivoised in significant part just to get the power that comes from it and he thinks that is normal and he thinks Takuto is concerned about power too.
The other is that Sugata is playing up his motives in order to see what Takuto's response to the idea of 'it's totally okay to want power more than protecting Wako'. That is not WHAT HE SAYS, but the implication (I think) is that protecting Wako was a smaller matter than obtaining power, and that it is reasonable to think that.
I personally favor the latter interpretation, because I think if Sugata were after power he would have moved a lot faster than he does in nearly everything: would've apprivoised earlier, would've fought Takuto earlier, would've joined the Crux earlier. Instead he actually waits until things seem necessary and he thinks on them very heavily.
However I do think, in a way, he sensed a kind of kinship with Head. Not a large one! But a resonance. He wanted to see if Takuto was the same way and asked him if he wanted power, but in such a way that Takuto would have the right to say "Yes I'm interested in power but that's okay" instead of feeling bad about it.
Instead of being okay with it, or judging Sugata for it, he doesn't seem to have any real opinion.
I assume this is just another way Sugata is testing Takuto. He has been pretty much shoving Wako at Takuto since episode one, and I think, regardless of SUGATA'S opinion on power, he would want Wako to be with someone who doesn't prioritize power first and ideally has become as powerful as Takuto is without a lust for it. Sugata isn't stupid, these are the basic markers of a SUCCESSFUL HERO and he himself doesn't have them, maybe Takuto does!
That said, I do think Sugata wanted power =x But I do think he also wants moooostly for the sake of protecting Wako.
